South India Hill Stations: Ooty, Kodaikanal, Munnar, Coorg — Which Is Right for You?

South India's hill stations are among the best in the country, but they're not interchangeable. Ooty, Kodaikanal, Munnar, and Coorg each have a distinct character. Choosing the right one — or the right combination — can make a significant difference to your trip.

Ooty: The Classic, Crowded, Worth-It One

Ooty (Udhagamandalam) is Tamil Nadu's most visited hill station, and with good reason. At 2,240 metres, it's genuinely cool, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train is a heritage experience unlike anything else in South India, and the tea estates beyond the town are beautiful. The Botanical Gardens, which date from 1848, are worth a slow morning.

The honest caveat: Ooty is crowded, especially on weekends and in summer (April–June). The main town can feel commercial. The trick is to go beyond town — Doddabetta Peak, Pykara Lake, the road toward Gudalur — where the landscape opens up and the crowds thin.

Paathai romba azhagaa irukku — "the road is very beautiful" — is something Tamil families say repeatedly on the Ooty ghat road. The 36-hairpin-bend drive from Mettupalayam to Ooty is one of the best ghat road experiences in South India. If you can, take the Nilgiri Mountain Railway for the ascent and a car for the descent — the train shows you angles of the valley the road doesn't.

Best for: families, first-time hill station visitors, train enthusiasts. Combine with Mysuru or Coorg.

Kodaikanal: The Quieter, More Romantic Choice

Kodaikanal sits at 2,133 metres in the Palani Hills with a different energy from Ooty — more introspective, less touristy, with a bohemian undercurrent from the American missionary community that developed it in the 19th century. The Pine Forest, Coaker's Walk, Dolphin's Nose viewpoint, and the star-shaped Kodaikanal Lake are all within walking distance of the town centre.

Priya Venkataraman, who has visited five times from Chennai: "Ooty is for families with kids. Kodaikanal is for couples who want to walk in the mist and not speak for a while. Konjam thamadhama poganum — you have to go slowly. That's the whole point."

Best for: couples, solo travellers, those who want solitude over activities.

Munnar: The Most Visually Spectacular

If you want the image people associate with South Indian hill stations — endless rolling tea estates, deep green valleys, mist between peaks — that image is Munnar. Located in Kerala's Idukki district at around 1,600 metres, it's extraordinary to look at in almost any weather.

The Eravikulam National Park hosts the Nilgiri Tahr (a mountain goat unique to the Western Ghats). The tea factory tours are genuinely interesting, not touristy. A local estate manager once told a visitor: "Eeyide mazha vannal, mist kandal, ningal kettunnath thennal aanu" — roughly, "when the rains come here, what you hear in the mist is honey." You understand this only when you're standing in it.

Best for: photographers, nature lovers, honeymoon couples, those combining with Kerala backwaters. Note: Munnar is 130 km from Kochi but takes 3.5–4 hours due to ghat roads.

Coorg: The Coffee Country

Coorg (Kodagu) is different from the other three — it's not a single hill station town but an entire district of coffee and cardamom estates, Western Ghats forest, and a distinctive Kodava tribal culture that exists nowhere else. Madikeri is the main town, but the experience of Coorg is about staying on an estate, walking through the coffee rows, and watching the mist come in at dusk.

Arjun Menon, who runs heritage estate tours in Coorg: "People come expecting a hill station. What they find is a way of life. The Kodava people have their own language, their own cuisine, their own martial traditions. Hogi bidi — just go, and let it show you what it is."

Best for: nature and culture travellers, plantation stay seekers, those combining with Mysuru or Kerala.

Combinations That Work

• Ooty + Kodaikanal: 6–7 days from Chennai. Up through Mettupalayam to Ooty (3 nights), then cross to Kodaikanal via Palani (2–3 nights).
• Munnar + Thekkady + Alleppey: Classic Kerala loop, 8–10 days from Kochi.
• Coorg + Mysuru: 5–6 days from Bengaluru. Mysuru for heritage, Coorg for nature.

The best hill station is the one that matches your pace. All four are worth visiting — ideally not all in the same week.
