South India Itinerary: Where to Start When You Don't Know Where to Start

20 January 2026 · 8 min read · Trip Planning

The most paralysing part of planning a South India trip is not finding things to see — South India has more than any trip can cover — but figuring out where to begin. Which city? Which state? Which direction to travel?

The Two Entry Points and What They Give You

Chennai is the natural entry for a Tamil Nadu-first itinerary. From Chennai you can head south along the coast toward Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry, or southwest toward Kanchipuram and the pilgrimage heartland. Chennai itself rewards a day or two — the Marina Beach promenade at dawn, Kapaleeshwarar Temple, and the Government Museum's bronze collection are genuinely worth the time.

Bengaluru is better for Karnataka-first or Kerala-from-the-north routes. It has the best domestic and international flight connectivity in South India. A drive southwest to Mysuru (145 km) then into Coorg, or south into Tamil Nadu, are all practical first moves.

If your flight lands in Kochi, you're already in the middle of South India's most visited state — start with Kerala and work outward.

Clockwise or Anticlockwise?

For a Tamil Nadu–Kerala circuit from Chennai, direction matters more than most people realise.

Clockwise (Chennai → interior Tamil Nadu → Kanyakumari → Kerala): You move through the heat of Tamil Nadu's pilgrim circuit first and arrive in Kerala's greener, cooler country as a reward. Our guide on cab vs public transport helps plan the legs. Most experienced travellers prefer this — you reach the backwaters and hill stations when you're already comfortable with the pace of South India.

Sowmya Krishnamurthy, a Bengaluru-based travel writer, has a rule: "Always end the trip in the most relaxing place. If you do Tirupati last, you'll leave exhausted. If you end in Alleppey or Kovalam, you'll leave feeling like South India was a gift. Work backwards from where you want to finish."

Building Your Route Around Real Distances

The fundamental mistake in South India planning is underestimating distances. Key drive times (good roads, no traffic):

  • Chennai to Madurai: 7–8 hours (460 km)
  • Madurai to Rameswaram: 2.5 hours (165 km)
  • Rameswaram to Kanyakumari: 3.5 hours (240 km)
  • Kanyakumari to Trivandrum: 1.5 hours (87 km)
  • Trivandrum to Alleppey: 1.5 hours (85 km)
  • Alleppey to Munnar: 4 hours (155 km, ghat road)
  • Munnar to Kochi: 3.5–4 hours (130 km, ghat road)
  • Kochi to Coorg: 5 hours (220 km)
  • Coorg to Mysuru: 2.5 hours (120 km)
  • Mysuru to Bengaluru: 3 hours (145 km)

A full circuit — Chennai to Bengaluru via all the above — is roughly 1,600 km. At a comfortable pace with 2 nights in most places, that's a 14–16 day trip.

Sample Routes by Trip Length

  • 5 days from Chennai: Chennai → Mahabalipuram → Pondicherry → Thanjavur → Madurai. Tamil Nadu coast and culture, unhurried.
  • 7 days from Kochi: Kochi → Munnar (2 nights) → Thekkady → Alleppey houseboat → Kovalam (2 nights). Full Kerala experience.
  • 10 days from Chennai: Chennai → Pondicherry → Thanjavur → Madurai → Rameswaram → Kanyakumari → Trivandrum → Alleppey → Kochi. Tight but doable.
  • 14 days from Chennai to Bengaluru: The full clockwise circuit. The classic South India trip.

Meenakshi Sundaram, a retired school principal from Madurai who has organised family circuits for 25 years, puts it simply: "Oru oorle rendu naal irunga — stay two days in each place. One day is for getting there and orienting yourself. The second day is when you actually see things."
